Mission
Positioned to deliver consistent services to academic and industry partners
Our mission is to provide the Department of Orthopaedics, other UI entities, and Industry a complete “in-house” research adjunctive service with specialization in large and small animal surgery, imaging, histology and biomechanical testing.
Animal Research Surgicenter (ARS)
The orthopaedic surgical program at ARS provides a centralized surgical and perioperative care program for all animals in research which is staffed and directed by Douglas Fredericks and personnel from Bone Healing Research Lab (BHRL), Iowa Spine Research Lab (ISRL) and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Greater than 1000 survival surgical procedures are performed annually in ARS.
Additionally, ARS provides surgical and post-op care services to other faculty within the University of Iowa. Support includes ICU / recovery, diagnostic digital x-ray, pqCT, μCT radiography, diagnostic lab, necropsy, and instrument and sterile supply preparation. The laboratory will provide surgical instruments, specialized equipment, such as power instruments, electrocautery and disposable surgical supplies.
Specialized equipment or instrumentation will be provided if requested. BHRL/ISRL/ARS also provides finite element modeling, gait analysis, biomechanical testing and histopathology sectioning. Each of these services are conducted in fully equipped laboratories within the Department.
